Built to Sing

Born in the Washburn USA Custom Shop in 1994, Woody isn’t just another guitar off a factory line. He came from a small team of builders who still cared about grain, balance, and tone more than marketing. This is his build sheet, the choices that let him sing.

♪ I wasn’t built for showrooms or spotlights. I was built to make music, plain and simple.

  • Year, Make, Model: 1994 Washburn USA Custom Shop guitar
  • Serial Number: 9405055
  • Body: Two‑piece book matched Padauk (African Hardwood)

Pronunciation: Padauk is commonly said “puh‑DOOK”, though woodworkers use several variations. Andy says “pa‑DUKE”

  • Grain: V‑shaped cathedral pattern
  • Neck & Head: One‑piece 1/4‑sawn Rock Maple
  • Fretboard: Rosewood
  • Skunk Stripe: Walnut inlay within Maple neck
  • Finish: Natural satin stain, reddish‑brown tones
  • Feel: Lightweight, resonant, warm

My makers didn’t cover me in paint. They gave me a warm stain and let the wood do the talking.

  • Pickups: Seymour Duncan ’59 (neck), likely JB (bridge)
  • Switching: 5‑way blade selector, factory original
  • Controls: Single master volume, single master tone. Both OEM Washburn components
  • Bridge: Wilkinson VS‑100N (with original posts, claw, and springs retained)
  • Tuners: Washburn‑branded Gotoh Magnum III locking tuners, staggered posts, 3×3
  • Nut: Original non‑locking nut, still going strong after 32 years
  • Pickup Tape: New amber Kapton

People say Padauk a few different ways. Doesn’t matter to me. I answer to Woody.

  • Bought new in 1994

I’ve been with Andy since the day I left the shop. After three decades, I’m not going anywhere.
